Karin, who has been to South Africa, is impressed by the ethos, activities and track record of Dreamcatcher: As a Non-Profit local community empowerment organisation,  Dreamcatcher is empowering women in South African townships with skills, knowledge and business access to ensure they develop into self-sustaining community based tourism businesses.  As tourism and business in general is dynamic, the approach to “stay with the women in a hands on fashion”, ensures they make it in a tough and fiercely protected  tourism business environment.

Dreamcatcher’s motto of ensuring that ‘words are turned into actions which ensure dreams are turned into reality’, is something, which is particularly encouraging for Karin. Offering local women from many different cultures in communities across South Africa, the chance to develop their own accommodation and local soul food into businesses called Homestay with Kamamma and Cook-up with Kamamma, is one of the most rewarding ways for any visitor to experience the essence of South Africa.

Meeting the locals and engaging them where they live is an experience that is growing in popularity with travelers. Dreamcatcher has pioneered this “truly responsible” tourism way and are well placed to offer visitors a truly local experience, stripped of pretences and staged culture. With Dreamcatcher visitors actually meet the community and learn about life as lived first hand by all who live there. Dreamcatcher is a registered trademark. The name given to the founder by a patriarch in one of the communities she has helped to improve quality of life.

The founding roots of The Dreamcatcher Foundation were started in 1984, well before ‘Apartheid’ was dismantled, by South African born, Anthea Rossouw. Starting out and working in creative ways to make a difference, Anthea volunteers on a daily basis to this day: working tireless to ensure that the “Kamammas” (Women who carry their babies on their back), develop to help themselves and, most importantly, in duty of care entrenched in the Dreamcatcher approach, help their own communities towards a better quality of life.
